Air-sealing a building and ventilating it are not opposing goals — they are the same goal, done deliberately. A leaky building 'ventilates' through random cracks: unfiltered, unrecovered, and driven by weather rather than need. A tight building replaces that accident with a plan.
What heat-recovery ventilation does. An HRV moves stale air out and fresh air in through separate airstreams that exchange heat in a core — fresh air arrives tempered instead of raw. The result is continuous, filtered fresh air with far less energy penalty than open windows or leaks.
